All things embedded will be on display at Embedded World 2017 in Nuremberg, Germany, 14-16 March. The show has 900+ exhibitions and over 30,000 visitors. And of course Samtec will be there. If you're not lucky enough to make it to Nuremberg -- the white sausage center-of-the-universe -- below is a quick preview of some products that are popular in embedded technology designs. From standard PC/104, to high-bandwidth mid-plane systems, to every type of two-piece mezzanine … [Read more...]
DesignCon 2017 — Flyover QSFP28 For 56+ Gbps Applications
A product demonstration that drew a lot of attention at DesignCon 2017 showed how Samtec FQSFP Flyover™ interconnects are used in the Keysight Reference Solution RS506 Digital Interconnect Test System. The demo has the 32 port Keysight VNA coupled to PLTS measurement software. With this system, one measurement captures all 32 ports. In this video, Jim Nadolny, Samtec’s Principle SI and EMI Engineer, walks us through the demo. Jim explains how the high-speed signals are routed … [Read more...]
Samtec Demos Flyover QSFP In Xilinx VCU118 Demonstration Board At DesignCon 2017
One of several demonstrations at DesignCon 2017 shows the variety of Samtec interconnects supporting the Xilinx® Virtex® UltraScale+ FPGA VCU118 Development Kit. Included in the kit is an FMC+ Active Loopback Card, which carries Samtec's direct attach Flyover™ QSFP28. In the Flyover QSFP28 demonstration, four GT 28 Gbps transceiver signals are generated by the FPGA and launched mid-board from the FireFly™ connector system. These 28 Gbps signals “flyover” the board … [Read more...]
Samtec Demonstrates PCIe® Over Fiber in Disaggregated Computing Applications
In this video, Kevin Burt of Samtec’s Optical Group explains one of Samtec’s product demonstrations at DesignCon 2017. The demo features a disaggregated computing platform with PCIe® Gen 3 fabric enabled by the patented FireFly™ mid-board optical technology. PCIe® Over Fiber PCIe® over Fiber technologies enable new and emerging HPC and Data Center architectures. Traditional systems place GPUs and system storage as close to the server and CPU as possible … [Read more...]
Flyover QSFP28 For 56+ Gbps Applications
At DesignCon 2017, Jim Nadolny, Samtec's Principle SI and EMI Engineer, presented(1) a technical paper entitled “Design of Flyover QSFP28 (FQSFP Series) for 56+ Gbps Applications.” This white paper discusses the Flyover QSFP (FQSFP) approach for 56+ Gbps applications to overcome the limitations from the large loss on typical QSFP ports with surface mount to PCB traces. By replacing the PCB traces to twinax cables, they achieved 7 dB lower insertion loss at 40 GHz -- compared to … [Read more...]
Calculating Connector Mating and Unmating Forces
We are asked all kinds of questions about both the electrical and mechanical properties of our mated connector sets. This makes sense because interconnects are obviously electromechanical components. On the electrical side, the two we answer the most are: what is the current rating of a connector?how does Samtec establish a voltage rating? Mechanical FAQs include: how many cycles will this connector handle?do you test to my specifications?what is the force required to mate or … [Read more...]
7 Reasons To Visit Samtec At DesignCon (Number 5 Will Blow Your Mind)
DesignCon 2017 is next week in San Jose, California. If you're going to be there, here are 7 reasons to visit us at booth 717. They're all good reasons, and #5 is really cool, but it may not actually blow your mind. Sorry. Like me, you've probably seen the "sponsored articles" at the bottom of other websites. I read some research that people like to read lists, and making some kind of outlandish prediction about one of the items further improves SEO. So I … [Read more...]
Samtec Expands AccliMate™ IP68 Sealed Cable Solutions Product Line
We are expanding our line of standard and custom AccliMate™ Sealed Cable Plugs and Receptacles, including new crimp sealed bayonet latching circulars. These systems meet IP67/IP68 requirements for dust-proof and waterproof sealing, and they are designed for industrial, outdoor, underwater and other harsh environments. The CCP-12, CCR-12, and CCRB-12 Series were developed as cost effective solutions with optional metal shielding for cable-to-cable and cable-to-panel applications. They … [Read more...]
Fretting Over Fretting Corrosion
Last week I posted a blog about a paper on Interconnect Susceptibility To Galvanic Corrosion. The paper was prepared David Scopelliti, a longtime friend of Samtec. As I mentioned there, Dave has a wealth of test, application, industry, and processing knowledge, and is well-respected and well-known in the industry. That’s a polite way of saying he knows a lot and has been around forever (think Moses in a lab coat). See a picture of Dave to the right. He's either … [Read more...]
Interconnect Susceptibility To Galvanic Corrosion
Our longtime friend Dave Scopelliti has prepared a succinct paper where he shares his insights on the issue of Galvanic (Electrolytic) Corrosion and interconnects. Dave has a wealth of test, application, industry, and processing knowledge, and is well-respected and well-known in the industry. That’s a polite way of saying he knows a lot and has been around for a long time. Think Moses in a lab coat. If you've ever seen Dave you understand what I'm talking about … [Read more...]
