Available in three pitches -- 0.80 mm, 1.27 mm and 2.00 mm – Samtec’s Tiger Eye™ interconnect systems are designed for micro rugged, high-reliability, high-cycle applications. Tiger Eye is a multi-finger, heat-treated, Beryllium Copper (BeCu) contact designed for rugged environments. The superior spring properties of Beryllium Copper make it ideal for high mating cycle applications. Once formed and hardened, BeCu will retain its shape under a wide variety of conditions. The contact mating … [Read more...]
Samtec 12G SDI At NAB 2017
The North American Broadcast Show, or NAB, is April 22-27 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. NAB is about everything digital in the fields of media, entertainment, and technology. Samtec is exhibiting its line of 12G SDI RF interconnects, including a product demonstration showing live return loss testing of different 12G SDI products, as well as displays of other high-speed interconnects used in the broadcast video industry. If you're in Vegas, we'd love to see you at booth … [Read more...]
New Shielded, Rugged, High-Speed Interconnect System
Shielded Connectors For EMI, EMC Protection Samtec is expanding its line of rugged, high-speed 0.80 mm pitch Edge Rate® interconnects. First is a mating set with both socket (ERF8 Series) and terminal (ERM8 Series) strips that are fully shielded. The shield encircles the entire mated connector system (a full 360ᵒ) to minimize the effects of EMI and EMC. A 16 mm mated stack height will be released first, with 10 and 14 mm stacks to follow. The 12 mm stack with shielding is already … [Read more...]
Samtec Flyover QSFP In Xilinx VCU118 (OFC 2017)
Kevin Burt, of the Samtec Optical Group, explains another one of the several demos that Samtec presented at OFC 2017. In this demo, four GT 28 Gbps transceiver signals are generated by an FPGA and launched mid-board from a FireFly™ 28 G x4 optical connector system. These 28 Gbps signals then “flyover” the board through a FQSFP twinax cable assembly, to the port, and loop back over the same path, where they are received by the FPGA. The Flyover™ QSFP28 … [Read more...]
Glass Weave Skew Effect In High Data Rate Serial Links
Our friend Eric Bogatin wrote a paper for DesignCon 2017 entitled "New Characterization Technique for Glass-Weave Skew." He wrote a summary article of the paper in Signal Integrity Journal. Since many of our readers strive to optimize their signal transmission path, I thought it would be worthwhile to pass this on. In Eric's own words, here's an overview of the article: The glass weave skew effect, sometimes referred to as the fiber weave effect, is an increasingly important … [Read more...]
PCIe Over Fiber With Samtec FireFly
Kevin Burt of the Samtec Optical Group walks us through one of Samtec’s product demonstrations at OFC 2017. This demo features a disaggregated computing platform with PCIe® Gen 3 fabric enabled by the patented FireFly™ mid-board optical technology. This PCIe protocol is extended outside of a standard computer bus over a distance of 100 meters. Kevin also gives a quick primer on FireFly: it's a very high-density, future-proof cable assembly available in both copper … [Read more...]
Samtec Flyover Minimizes Signal Loss
Martin Rowe and our friends at EDN recently ran an article entitled "High-Speed Signals Jump Over PCB Traces." Martin begins by explaining that every time serial data rates increase, they expose problems masked at slower speeds. He goes on to summarize, "Many of those problems occur because of decreased signal integrity from losses that occur in PCB traces, vias, and connectors ... Boards used in servers and switches are often quite large and they typically have "out of the box" … [Read more...]
Interconnects For Unmanned Systems and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
By all accounts, unmanned systems in general, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) in particular, are expected to see significant growth in the next ten years. The military market will account for the majority the UAV sales and sales growth. The most common types of Unmanned Systems include: UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles that operate in the air)UGVs (Unmanned Ground Vehicles that operate on the groundUSVs (Unmanned Surface Vehicles that float on water)UUVs (Unmanned Underwater Vehicles that … [Read more...]
Rugged Industrial Interconnects: The Design Behind The Description
Our friends at Connector Supplier keep the world up-to-date on everything in the connector universe. They recently ran an article from Samtec entitled Rugged Industrial Interconnects: The Design Behind The Description. Many industrial electronics OEM designers use the word "rugged" to describe their board-level interconnect needs. While rugged can mean different things to different people, it usually includes the ability to withstand high shock and vibration applications, maintain … [Read more...]
OFC 2017 – New Products, Announcements, and Demos from Samtec
OFC 2017, The Optical Networking and Communication Conference & Exhibition, is a global forum and exhibition for optical communications and networking possibilities. Samtec will showcase the latest FireFly™ Optical Cable Systems, including new PCIe® Over Fiber, extended temperature, and low-profile designs. We will also discuss how the Samtec FireFly™ connector was adopted by the Consortium for On Board Optics, and we will run four product demonstrations, among others. OFC … [Read more...]
