The battle for next-generation optical transceivers remains active. The three leading specifications duking it out include COBO, OSFP and QSFP-DD. While all have their pros and cons, the industry continues to sort out the best solutions for the front panel and mid-board optical engines. What is QSFP-DD? Current QSFP solutions meet the existing demands of the telecom/datacom industries. The QSFP-DD MSA focuses on a next generation high-density, high-speed pluggable backwards … [Read more...]

Flyover Enables High Speed, Simplifies PCB Design
Bob Hult, our friend at Bishop and Associates and Connector Supplier, recently published High Speed Signals Take The High Road on the Connector Supplier website. Among other things, the article discusses the challenges of high-speed signals in printed circuit boards. As always, Bob's article is well-researched and worth the read. But if you only have time for the Cliff's Notes, I'll try to summarize it here. Quick Summary Bob begins by pointing out that "as data rates pushed … [Read more...]
Samtec Introduces 14 Gbps FireFly™ FMC Development Kit
System designers and engineers constantly face design challenges to achieve higher data-rates in highly dense applications. A popular system-level design approach in many high-speed applications marries the configurability and high-speed performance of FPGAs with the advantages of fiber optics. Samtec's new 14 Gbps FireFly™ FMC Development Kit provides an easy connection between FPGAs and fiber optics. This new solution offers an easy-to-use evaluation and development … [Read more...]
Samtec Launches New Twinax FlyOver ChalkTalk
What have you done for me lately? No doubt all employees have at least mentally heard those words from their employers. "Here is the latest on the widget project," said everyone to their boss. Designers and engineers especially hear that question. The constant expectation for endless improvement and innovations remains a part of everyday life for engineers. Electrical engineers, signal integrity specialists, and PCB designers face a unique challenge. As bandwidth … [Read more...]
Samtec Interconnect Solutions Drive “Big Data”
Data. Data. Data. The world is full of data. As humans breathe, use smartphones, or have a meal, a digital trail of data is left behind. That data trail is highly lucrative for companies ranging from retail and high-tech to online advertising and social media. Why all the fuss on Big Data? One source calls Big Data "extremely large data sets that may be analyzed computationally to reveal patterns, trends, and associations, especially relating to human behavior and interactions." … [Read more...]
Samtec Expands Eye Speed® Ultra Low Skew Twinax Cable Assembly Options
The ever-present demand for higher data throughput spans industries and applications. Regardless of industry, engineers continue to address SI performance demands all along the signal path: in PCBs, connectors and cables. Engineers realize that routing signals through lossy PCBs, vias and other components has become one of the most complex challenges designers face. Samtec's "Flyover" design approach breaks the constraints of traditional signaling. Samtec Eye Speed® Ultra Low Skew Twinax … [Read more...]
Samtec Flyover QSFP In Xilinx VCU118 (OFC 2017)
Kevin Burt, of the Samtec Optical Group, explains another one of the several demos that Samtec presented at OFC 2017. In this demo, four GT 28 Gbps transceiver signals are generated by an FPGA and launched mid-board from a FireFly™ 28 G x4 optical connector system. These 28 Gbps signals then “flyover” the board through a FQSFP twinax cable assembly, to the port, and loop back over the same path, where they are received by the FPGA. The Flyover™ QSFP28 … [Read more...]
Glass Weave Skew Effect In High Data Rate Serial Links
Our friend Eric Bogatin wrote a paper for DesignCon 2017 entitled "New Characterization Technique for Glass-Weave Skew." He wrote a summary article of the paper in Signal Integrity Journal. Since many of our readers strive to optimize their signal transmission path, I thought it would be worthwhile to pass this on. In Eric's own words, here's an overview of the article: The glass weave skew effect, sometimes referred to as the fiber weave effect, is an increasingly important … [Read more...]
