This week marks a historical milestone. In 1987 the first female artist was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Granted, this milestone isn’t of lasting significance to mankind like a revloutionary technology or a treatment for a dangerous medical condition, but it is newsworthy to some of us.
By the way, the honor goes to Aretha Franklin. Some of my favorite Aretha songs include “I Never Loved A Man The Way That I Love You” and “Think,” the latter being my personal favorite. Her big hit “Respect” was written by Otis Redding; my favorite Otis songs are “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” and “Try a Little Tenderness.”
Yes, it’s easy for me to get caught-up in lists. I was recently asked to list our best blogs from last year. That’s a tricky question; how do you measure what is best? Popularity isn’t always the best indicator; if that were the case, the 1977 Grammy For Best New Artist would have gone to Elvis Costello (My Aim Is True) and not the Starland Vocal Band (Afternoon Delight). Yeah, that’s an obscure reference but I feel better finally getting it off my chest …
