Samtec's Istvan Novak has been named DesignCon Engineer of the Year. Congratulations, Istvan! Istvan is a Principle Signal and Power Integrity Engineer at Samtec, working on advanced signal and power integrity designs. He introduced the industry's first 25 um power-ground laminates for large rigid computer boards and worked with component vendors to create a series of low-inductance and controlled-ESR bypass capacitors. DesignCon 2020 Best Paper Award Samtec proudly … [Read more...]

Connector, Cable Systems For AI Hardware Design
In this video, Samtec's Ralph Page walks us through a live demonstration of a prototypical AI (artificial intelligence) hardware design. It shows PCB connectors and twinax cable systems with performance capabilities suitable for AI hardware applications. It’s a configurable, next-generation, possibly GPU-based system that combines a cable mesh backplane, a rigid-style backplane, high-speed edge card connectors, and precision RF interconnects. For example, this design could be based on … [Read more...]
Live DesignCon 2019 Updates
DesignCon 2019 is in full force this week from the Santa Clara Convention Center. There is tons of energy on the floor, during the presentations and on the sidelines. Real-world 56 Gbps PAM4/112 Gbps PAM4 solutions are everywhere. The technical presentations feature updates on 5G, V2X connectivity and testing, and other tech trends that will define 2019. One interesting panel discussed the challenges and benefits of AI-based hardware design. Highlights from that are below. What else is … [Read more...]
New Zynq UltraScale+ Platform Offers 32 Gbps via FMC+ and FireFly™ Interfaces
One of the most popular interfaces in the FPGA world is FMC. This has recently been expanded to FMC+. The new VITA 57.4 standard defines two new connectors. Combined, they offer 32 full-duplex channels running at 28 Gbps. However, the current generation of FPGAs and MPSoCs have transceivers supporting data rates in excess of 32 Gbps. Why? Emerging protocols – including PCIe Gen 5 and JESD204C – will run at 32 Gbps. Engineers developing solutions using 32Gbps+ protocols need … [Read more...]
Samtec FireFly™ Micro Flyover System™ Links ASIC Development Platforms
As with any product development, ASIC designers aim to quicken time to market and reduce unnecessary design cycles. Designing full-custom ASICs comes with many benefits but leveraging the flexibility, configurability and high-performance of FPGAs has become a preferred method for ASIC development. ASIC development with FPGAs features several benefits. FPGAs allow for fast and accurate ASIC modeling and verification. Emulated prototype ASICs enable accelerated software and firmware … [Read more...]
