Samtec next-generation connector solutions are designed to meet the challenges of 224 Gbps PAM4 architectures. At DesignCon 2024, Samtec had five product demonstrations and displays showcasing our 224 Gbps products.
Many incorporated Si-Fly HD™, our new chip adjacent (or on-package) Samtec Flyover® Cable system. In the video above, Jonathan Sprigler, High-Speed Product Manager at Samtec, walks you through some of the 224 Gbps demos and displays in the Samtec booth.
First, Jonathan shows a display of Samtec 224 Gbps cable solutions, including mid-board, mid-board to front panel, and mid-board to back panel solutions. All of these products incorporate Samtec Si-Fly HD technology.
Next, we take a closer look at two of Samtec’s 224 G live product demos, each showing a different way to evaluate the channel. The first is a full channel measurement.
The demo shown above is an asynchronous 224 Gbps PAM4 system. A Synopsys 224G Ethernet PHY is transmitting 32-bit, PRBS data at 224 Gbps PAM4. The signal travels from a Samtec BE70A, BullsEye® high-performance test connector (mating to precision 1.35 mm compression mount RF jacks), through the Samtec Si-Fly HD 20” (.51 meters) cable assembly to a second Synopsys 224 G PHY for analysis.
By the way, this was the longest reach 224 Gbps active demo at DesignCon.
The results are impressive, with a PRE-FEC BER of e-6. The total loss is approximately 40 dB at 56 GHz. As mentioned before, the Samtec cable is half a meter.
The loss attributed to the Samtec cable assembly and two characterization boards is 29 dB.
A second 224 Gbps demonstration includes a Rohde and Schwarz ZVA 110 VNA. The VNA measures the insertion loss and return loss of another Samtec Si-Fly HD cable assembly up to 110 GHz.
The loss is flat until 80 GHz, and there’s no suckout.
Also, coming soon is our new Eye Speed Air twinax, and the loss is 14 dB per meter, at 56 GHz.
Samtec next next-generation 224 G interconnects are designed to meet the system requirements of AI, machine learning, quantum computing, and data centers, among others.
