Ever seen Despicable Me? It’s got some great quotes.(1) My favorite is Agnes’s line when she sees the giant stuffed unicorn: “It’s so fluffy I’m going to die!”
How does this possibly, in any way remotely relate to connectors? Just when I thought we couldn’t add any more design flexibility into the mPOWER® line of power connectors, we somehow did. IOW, it’s so easy to design and find the right connector that I’m going to die! OK, it’s not as short and sweet as Agnes’s line, but you get the point …
mPOWER Micro Power Connectors
If you’re not familiar with it, Samtec’s mPOWER connectors are micro-pitch, high-power solutions with incredible design flexibility for power-only or power/signal combination applications.
The 2.00 mm pitch power connector set (UMPT/UMPS) features a small form factor. Compared to traditional power connectors that carry 20 Amps per blade in a large form factor, mPOWER passes 18 Amps per blade in about half the size, freeing-up the board for other components or minimizing package size.
Due to the wide variety of stack heights available, mPOWER can be easily added to new or existing architectures alongside one of Samtec’s high-speed connector systems for a unique two-piece power and signal/ground solution. And, the connectors are currently available in 2, 3, 4, and 5 power blades.
What’s New?
Plenty. First, we are getting ready to add several new lead styles which increase the board stacking flexibility of the mated sets. Stack heights are currently available from 5 mm to 12 mm. The new lead styles greatly expand the range of stack heights available. With the addition of these pins, mating UMPT, UMPS connectors will be available on 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, and 20 mm.
Second, UMPT and UMPS power connectors are currently available with 2, 3, 4, and 5 power blades. We’re doubling that offering to add 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 blades.

Design additions coming soon to the mPOWER line include latching options on the new UMPC cable system, as well as the UMPT vertical and right angle terminal strips. Core components and tooling for the cable assembly are due later this year.
And while this isn’t new, don’t forget that the power blades have optional two-stage mating, and can be selectively loaded to achieve any specific creepage and clearance requirements. Optional weld tabs provide increased stability on the board.
