Next month, two Samtec engineers will participate in EDI CON ONLINE, a free annual online training event from the publisher of Microwave Journal and Signal Integrity Journal. In separate talks, Istvan Novak and Kiana Montes, of Samtec will give tips on power distribution and breakout region design.

On Wednesday, October 4th at 10:30 Eastern, Istvan Novak will take the virtual stage to teach about PDNs. His Featured Talk is called: Three Design Tips for Power Distribution Networks.
Power distribution has to work properly. Without it the system will not work, so signal integrity and system functionality become totally irrelevant. Unfortunately for power integrity designs and validation, there are no industry standards, and often even the specifications and requirements are incomplete.
During the power distribution design process, many of the requirements are left to the designer. In this EDICON discussion, Istvan covers design tips for power distribution networks, including considerations of capacitance loss in MLCCs due to DC and AC bias, the need for validated power-converter models, and how to avoid cable-braid loop error in PDN measurements.
Two weeks later, on October 18 at 2:00PM Eastern time, Kiana Montes takes the stage with her workshop, “Breakout Region (BOR) Design Changes Everything.” She will explain how the design of the BOR (or launch) on the PCB dramatically impacts performance.

In short, it’s more than just selecting the best interconnect. The BOR, which consists of a short section of trace and signal vias that connect to the tip of the connector, must be modeled and optimized together with the interconnect. Kiana will show you the disappointing performance of an unoptimized BOR design, the excellent performance of an optimized BOR design, and the results of a creative design that enables power, analog, and digital signals to all transverse a single connector that was originally designed for digital signals.
You can register for free for EDI CON ONLINE now. Istvan’s talk is listed towards the top of the agenda (in the registration portal), and Kiana’s is about 2/3 the way through (the list is organized in chronological order). The online event consists of 30-minute technical sessions where industry experts focus on design tips and strategies to assist engineers. Organized into four tracks (Signal Integrity/Power Integrity; 5G/Wi-Fi/IoT; PCB/Interconnect/EMC-EMI; and Radar/Automotive/SATCOM), each occurring on a Wednesday in October, the event will be available live (with Q&A) and later on demand as well.
