One (of many) benefits of living in a post-COVID world is a return to normal schedule. It’s so much fun to see the latest block buster (Go see Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania!) in the move theater. Many people look forward to traveling (mostly) without any restrictions. It’s almost like 2019 again!

Another part of professional life returning to normal is the scheduling of high-tech trade shows. Earlier this month, DesignCon 2023 returned to its normally scheduled time. March 2023 sees the return of OFC to it typical time slot. Plus, OFC is in San Diego again. Who doesn’t like going there in late winter?
OFC 2023 – What to Expect?
OFC bills itself as The Premier Event in Telecom and Data Center Optics. For attendees and the 500+ exhibiting companies like Samtec, OFC offers an opportunity to network, collaborate and mingle with global leaders in optical communications and networking professionals.
OFC 2023 will be a hybrid conferene with both in-person and virtual presentations coming live MArch 5-9, 2023 from the San Diego Convention Center. OFC also offers a strong recruitment program for students, fresh graduates and experienced profesisonals as well.
Samtec Demos at OFC 2023
As always, Samtec will feature a number of optical, copper and RF product demonstrations. OFC 2023 will be no different. Here are some details on our featured demos.
112 Gbps PAM4 Product Demonstrator

This live demonstration shows six of Samtec’s 112 Gbps PAM4 connector systems. It includes board-to-board connector sets, as well as two Samtec Flyover® cable systems. One is a mid-board to cable backplane configuration, and the other is a mid-board to front panel. These cable systems emulate real-world data center system architectures.
Each board has four Alphawave AlphaCORE Multi-Standard SerDes. For each connector set, the Alphawave SerDes is transmitting 112 Gbps PAM4 PRBS data, and we’re receiving and analyzing the signal performance on the other board.
PCIe® 4.0 Over Fiber with Hot Add
Samtec’s PCIe®-Over-Fiber FireFly™ Adapter Card (PCOA Series) was developed by our partner Dolphin Interconnect Solutions. The PCOA series utilizes Samtec’s PCI Express®-Over-Fiber FireFly™ Optical Cable Assemblies (PCUO series). Samtec is the only company in the world offering reset functionality and cable present sidebands in this form factor.
In HPC and data centers system architectures, common applications link PCIe® 4.0 hosts with NVMe either directly or via copper cable assemblies. The Samtec/Dolphin demo illustrates remote connections via 100 m fiber optics cable assemblies.
One of the new features of the adapter card is the capability to do a surprise hot add. A surprise hot add feature allows a new resource to be added to a system that is already running. The resource can be a storage device, camera, or GPU, or FPGA.
This allows a new resource to be added and be available without shutting down the server. Without the surprise hot add, the host needs to be rebooted to enumerate and find the PCIe® devices attached to the server. Designers can add devices on-the-fly, and when the device is restarted, it does so with zero errors.
Other “Faster” Product Demonstations
Samtec will be presenting multiple demonstrations and products that will help you design systems at 112 Gbps, as well as set you up for 224 Gbps. Stop by and learn more about Samtec’s silicon-to-silicon solutions, including Accelerate®, mPOWER®, Si-Fly™, and NovaRay®products. By combining our expertise in signal integrity, advanced products, flexible designs, and Sudden Service, we are prepared to help you solve all of your interconnect needs.

Samtec Participation in OIF Interoperability Demonstration
Samtec is a long time member of OIF. For the first time, Samtec will participate in OIF’s Interoperability Demonstration at OFC 2023. This year, 34 member companies are contributing to the demo.
OIF’s multivendor interoperability demo will feature live demonstrations in four areas: 400ZR optics, Co-Packaging architectures, Common Electrical I/O (CEI) architectures and Common Management Interface Specification (CMIS) implementations.
Join Samtec and more at OFC 2023 Booth #5101 to see the future of data center networks in action!
