Cutting-edge data rates have received much well-deserved press in the electronics media. New 56 and 112 Gbps PAM4 systems are in operation with verified, sustainable performance, and we’re on the doorstep of 224 Gbps PAM4.
Having said that, the majority of Samtec customers don’t need these extreme data rates. For many designers and many applications, high speed, if it’s needed at all, is 10 Gbps or less. They need a reliable connector system capable of handling those slightly higher data rates, but one that is also rugged and has a variety of options to configure it to their design requirements.
Samtec’s Q-Strip® products provide all of that and more:
High Speed If You Need It
A mated QSH, QTH system, at 5mm mated height, is rated to 10 Gbps NRZ. That performance declines as the stack heights increase.
Integral Ground Plane
Surface mount ground planes are positioned between the two rows of signal pins for improved electrical performance.
Ground Plane Can Be Used For Power
The integral ground plane can also be used as a power plane. If used for power, each ground plane can handle 23-25 amps, depending on the series.
All SMT Design, Including The Ground Plane
The ground plane and connector tails are all SMT. On connectors available from other manufacturers, the ground plane has through-hole pins. The all-SMT design saves PCB real estate by eliminating plated through-holes, and it simplifies manufacturing by removing the through-hole processing step.

Variety
Q-Strip products are available on .8mm (QSE, QTE), .5mm (QSH, QTH), and .635 mm (OFS, QMS) pitch. The .5mm pitch is the most popular. Most of these products are also available in vertical and right angle configurations, and standard stack heights range from 5-14 mm.
Plenty of Design Flexibility
Standard design elements include polarization, alignment pins, mating high-speed cable assemblies if you need extra reach, and precision stand-offs.
It’s Also Rugged
Q-strip products are verified as Samtec Extended Life Products. E.L.P.™ products are tested to rigorous standards which evaluate contact resistance in simulated storage and field conditions. These connectors pass 10-year Mixed Flowing Gas (MFG) and achieve high mating cycles (250 to 2,500).
Q-Strip Is Ubiquitous
Common applications include servers, network systems like routers, switches, hubs, bridges, industrial controls and equipment, computers and peripherals, test and measurement, multi-chip modules, and high-resolution graphics devices, to name a few.
