This video from Super Computing 2019 (SC19) showcases a new embedded optical development platform and reference design. This new solution combines the latest FPGA solutions from REFLEX CES with the FireFly™ Micro Flyover System® from Samtec.
Matt Burns, Technical Marketing Manager from Samtec, walks us through the demonstration.
One part of this new platform is the Sargon Stratix® 10 FPGA FMC+ Instant Development Kit from REFLEX CES.
The Sargon platform provides FPGA developers the best out-of-the-box experience, combining the best in class compact hardware platform with an easy-to-use, intuitive software environment.
The second part of the new platform is Samtec’s 25/28 Gbps FireFly FMC+ Development Kit.
The FireFly FMC+ module attaches to the Sargon IDK via the FMC+ expansion connector. This is Samtec’s VITA 57.4 high density, high speed SEARAY™ system.
Using the Transceiver Tool Kit within the Intel Quartus software, PBRS31 data routes from the Intel Stratix 10 FPGA on the Sargon via the FMC+ connectors and Firefly optical engines.
An optical loopback routes the data back the same route to the Stratix 10 FPGA.
The BERT functionality of the Quartus software easily shows the performance across the platform.
We see 448 Gbps aggregate data throughput. That is 28 Gbps across each of the 16 channels.
The bit error rate (BER) across the entire system is an impressive e-12, showing zero BER.

The eye patterns for each of the 16 channels are wide-open.

The combination of FPGA expertise from REFLEX CES, and optical connectivity from Samtec, offers designers an easy-to-use embedded optical development platform.
Potential applications include AI, FinTech, FPGA/ASIC emulation, IP development, High Speed Communications, Mil/Aero, Medical Vision and many more.
