56 Gbps PAM4, 112 Gbps PAM4, and 28 Gbps
DesignCon is where Samtec showcases new products and product demonstrations that display high-speed technologies for Silicon-to-Silicon optimization. Our demos this year show interconnect systems in 56 Gbps PAM4, 112 Gbps PAM4, and 28 Gbps applications.
Here’s a list of the demos scheduled for DesignCon 2018:
56 Gbps PAM4 Demonstration Of Keysight PXIe VNA and Samtec Flyover™
A Keysight M937XA PXIe VNA sources 16 pairs of 56G-PAM4 data rate reference channels. The 16 signal pairs route through two Samtec Flyover QSFP-DD connectors, each carrying eight signal pairs, to two Samtec AcceleRate Cable assemblies. The cable is a 24” Samtec Eye Speed ultra-low skew twinax cable, operating at 56 Gbps PAM4 within the Flyover QSFP-DD systems.
The 16 signal pairs then route back to the VNA where real-time frequency domain measurements such as channel insertion loss, return loss, NEXT and FEXT occur.
Xilinx / Samtec 56 Gbps PAM4 Backplane Demonstration
Next-generation backplanes in data center applications must support faster data rates up to 56Gbps PAM4 and beyond. The latest Xilinx VirtexUltraScale+ FPGAs offer groundbreaking MGT technology supporting data rates up to 56 Gbps-PAM4. Samtec ExaMAX® High-Speed Backplane Connectors are a reliable 56 Gbps-PAM solution supporting traditional, orgthogonal, co-planar and cable backplane applications.
Key demonstration features include:
⎼ Four ports of 56G-PAM4 PRBS31 data sourced from the Xilinx VirtexUltraScale+ FPGAs through the Samtec ExaMAX® SI Evaluation Kit.
⎼ 30” trace length via two Tachyon ExaMAX® Test Paddles, one Tachyon ExaMAX® Backplane, and two ExaMAX® EBTM/EBTF-RA mated pairs.
⎼ Channel output displayed via Eye Diagrams, data rates, BER, errors, etc.
Credo / Samtec 112 Gbps PAM4 Long Reach Over Cable Demonstration
Next-generation high-speed data center equipment demand robust signal integrity solutions for routing signals over long reach PCB traces and Flyover cable applications. The combination of Credo’s 112 Gbps-PAM4 CDRs with Samtec’s AcceleRate® Cable solutions provide an ideal proof-of-concept for long reach signals over cable.
Key demonstration features include:
⎼ Two ports of 112 Gbps-PAM4 data sourced from Credo CDRs through the Samtec AcceleRate® Cable SI Evaluation Kit.
⎼ 12” cable length of Samtec ultra-low skew twixax cable operating at 112 Gbps-PAM4 within the Samtec AcceleRate® Cable SI Evaluation Kit.
⎼ Channel output displayed via signal loss (dB), data rates (Gbps) and BER.
28 Gbps Product Demonstrator
As 28 Gbps data rates proliferate across a wide variety of applications, system designers must optimize signal integrity across a number of interconnect solutions. The Samtec 28 Gbps Product Demonstrator emulates a fully functional, system-level data center chassis routing signals through backplane and mezzanine connectors and copper and optical cable assemblies. Key demonstration features include:
⎼ Real-time Eye Diagrams featuring BER and data rates per individual Samtec interconnect product family.
⎼ Demonstrably validate simulation capabilities compared to actual results.
FireFly™ Micro Flyover System™ With Xilinx FPGA
In this demo, four GT 28 Gbps transceiver signals are generated by an FPGA and launched mid-board from a FireFly™ 28 G x4 optical connector system. These 28 Gbps signals then “flyover” the board through a FQSFP twinax cable assembly, to the port, and loop back over the same path, where they are received by the FPGA.
The Flyover™ QSFP28 demonstration confirms 28 Gbps performance on all four links, with zero bit errors, after having traveled over 16” (40.64 cm) of twinax cable. This demo shows the variety of Samtec interconnects supporting the Xilinx® Virtex® UltraScale+ FPGA VCU118 Development Kit. Included in the kit is an FMC+ Active Loopback Card, which carries Samtec’s direct attach Flyover™ QSFP28.
This loopback mezzanine card was designed to be used in conjunction with the Xilinx UltraScale+ VCU118 development board, and is included in the VCU118 Development Kit. This kit is obviously available from Xilinx.
Credo / Samtec 50 Gbps Backplane Cable Assembly Demonstration

Routing signals through lossy PCBs, vias and other components has become one of the most complex challenges designers face. Samtec’s Backplane Cable Assemblies break the constraints of traditional backplane designs resulting in a cost-effective, high-performance answer to the challenges of 5o Gbps-PAM4 bandwidths. The combination of Credo’s 50 Gbps PAM4 CDRs with Samtec’s ExaMAX® Backplane Cable Assemblies provide an ideal proof-of-concept for long reach signals over cabled backplanes.
Key demonstration features include:
⎼ Eight ports of 50 Gbps PAM4 data sourced from Credo CDRs through the Samtec ExaMAX® Backplane Cable Assembly.
⎼ 12″ and 24″ cable length of Samtec ultra-low skew twinax cable operating at 50 Gbps-PAM4.
⎼ Channel output displayed via signal loss (dB), data rates (Gbps) and BER.
Texas Instruments / Samtec 50 Gbps IEEE PAM4 Backplane Demonstration
Next-generation backplanes in data center application must support faster data rates up to 50+ Gbps PAM4. The latest TI retimers offer groundbreaking technology supporting data rates up to 50+ Gbps-PAM4. Samtec ExaMAX® High-Speed Backplane Connectors offer a tried-and-true 50+ Gbps-PAM solution supporting traditional, orgthogonal, co-planar and cable backplane applications.
Key demonstration features include:
⎼ Four ports of 50+ Gbps -PAM4 PRBS31 data sourced from the Texas Instruments retimers through the Samtec ExaMAX® SI Evaluation Kit.
⎼ 30” trace length via two Tachyon ExaMAX® Test Paddles, one Tachyon ExaMAX® Backplane, and two ExaMAX® EBTM/EBTF-RA mated pairs.
⎼ Channel output displayed via Eye Diagrams, data rates, BER, errors, etc.
This demo is at the Texas Instruments booth (#619)
