Optical networking may not be a topic that most people think about. However, social media users will fume if a bad fiber optics cable causes a data center outage. That may end the world!

The folks who keep the data centers running may be away this week. The center of the optical networking industry definitely resides in San Diego this week. The Optical Networking and Communication Conference & Exhibition – aka “OFC” – occurs this week.
As a leader in on-board optics, Samtec will showcase a number of demos featuring the latest FireFly™ innovations. Many copper-based 56 Gbps PAM4 and 112 Gbps PAM4 demos will also be on hand.
56 Gbps PAM4 FireFly Optical Engines with Direct Connect Technology
The demonstration platform showcases low latency, high performance, on-board optical engines transmitting at 56 Gbps PAM4 per channel. The FireFly copper and optical options offer a direct connection into the ASIC/FPGA package, bypassing the PCB for improved density and performance.

The latest FireFly solutions are compatible with new generation FPGAs that support 56G PAM4 transceivers.
112 Gbps PAM4 Flyover Cable Solution
Samtec’s NovaRay™ to ExaMAX® Cable Assembly offers
A full 112 Gbps PAM4 chip-to-chip channel routes from a Xilinx transceiver test chip through multiple Twinax Flyover™ Cable Assemblies, an ExaMAX® Backplane Cable Assembly and back to the Xilinx transceiver test chip.
56 Gbps PAM4 Active Product Demonstrator
The 56 Gbps PAM4 Active Product Demonstrator showcases Samtec’s comprehensive portfolio of high-performance interconnects in a typical data center chassis application.

It offers a complete system design based on Credo Semiconductor SERDES ICs that measure and display 56 Gbps PAM4 performance over 88 lanes.
112 Gbps PAM4 Samtec Flyover with QSFP-DD
Samtec’s FQSFP-DD to NovaRay Cable Assembly offers a high-density escape from the system ASIC to the front panel. This demo exhibits 112 Gbps PAM4 connectivity via a Credo Pelican II SERDES test board via Samtec’s FQSFP-DD to NovaRay Cable Assembly.
Samtec 56 Gbps 5m ExaMAX® Backplane Cable Demonstration
eSilicon and Samtec will demonstrate true long-reach capability by combining eSilicon 56G long-reach 7nm DSP SerDes and Samtec ExaMAX® Backplane Cable Assemblies.

This new architecture paradigm showcases 56Gbps PAM4 data rates virtually error free (preFEC!) through 5m backplane cable assembly. The demo offers 2 Tbps aggregate bandwidth in the diameter of an index finger!
