One of the biggest tradeshows in entertainment and media is NAB Show. It is the world’s largest annual conference and expo for professionals who create, manage, and distribute entertainment across all platforms
At this year’s event in Las Vegas, Samtec will feature a variety of interconnect solutions targeted at the broadcast video market. These include mid-board and panel mount optical systems based on FireFly™ , True75TM 75Ω RF Systems, full turnkey RF cable assemblies, and high-speed, high density backplane systems.
Of several products being featured at NAB Show, the FireFly™ system, which enables chip-to-chip, board-to-board and system-to-system connectivity at data rates up to 28 Gbps, is a must-see. One advantage FireFly™ gives designers is the flexibility of using copper or optical cable assemblies interchangeably within the same connector footprint.
FireFly™ flexibility will be illustrated in two exhibits at NAB Show: unique customer applications and adoption by broadcast video standards bodies. Stop by the Las Vegas Convention Center North Hall Booth N1218 April 18-21, 2016 for more detail from Samtec’s technology experts.
Paltek Image Cube 4K-8K Video Processing Board
Paltek, a Samtec customer, has developed “Image Cube” – an FPGA-based image processing unit compatible with high-resolution 8K image sizes, 8K image composites, and 4K to 8K upconversion. Paltek adopted Samtec’s FireFly™ for reduced footprint, increased density and higher throughput vs traditional BNC cabling options. Features of “Image Cube” include:

- Image processing unit compatible with 4K UHDTV to 8K UHDTV upconversion
- Enables processing/interfacing to multiple image types
- Multiple 3G/6G SDI inputs converted to 12G SDI outputs
- Leverages Samtec FireFly™ Micro Flyover System™ for reduced footprint and increased density vs traditional BNC cabling options
Panel Mount Optical Interface for ARIB STD-B58 Output Receptacle
UHDTV Studio Production Systems transmit and receive multiple high density 4K/8K images at 60 Hz or 120 Hz frame rates. Copper cable assemblies are capable of routing these signals over short distances, but high-speed optical interfaces are required for video transmission in broadcast facilities.

A customized, panel mount version of Samtec’s FireFly™ Micro Flyover System™ Active Optical Cable Assembly has been adopted by the ARIB STD-B58 standard for this purpose. Features of this solution include:
- ECUO Series Active Optical Cable Assemblies in a x24 transmit or x12 receive configuration
- Data rates up to 14 Gbps per channel
- Link lengths of up to 100 meters using OM3 multi-mode fiber
- Industry standard MT ferule termination embedded in a BNC-style interface
