The HSEC8 series, a high-speed edge card socket on .8 mm pitch, is our most popular edge card connector, and one of our biggest selling products series.
New Signal, Power Card Edge Connector
A recently released option on the HSEC8 is a signal, power card edge combo connector. The HSEC8-PV is available with one or two banks of power pins. Each bank contains two power pins, and each bank is rated up to 60 amps. Through-hole tails on the power pins are designed for .062” (1.60 mm) and .093” (2.36 mm) thick PCBs. The mating card thickness is .062” (1.60 mm). Optional weld tabs increase the mechanical strength of the part to the board.
Signal pins are available in 40, 60, or 80 total pins; this high-speed connector is rated at 28 Gbps.
Edge Rate® Contact
All HSEC8 products incorporate the Edge Rate® contact. Edge Rate is rugged and can handle high cycle and high speed applications.
With some connectors, the mating edge of the contact is the cut edge of the pin. This reduces the life of the connector because repeated cycles against the cut edges of the contact can wear-out the plating.
But the mating surface of the Edge Rate contact is the smooth, milled side of the contact. This smooth mating surface reduces wear tracks on the contact, increasing the durability and cycle life of the contact system.
Also, the thin, narrow, cut edges of the Edge Rate contact are positioned side-by-side. This minimizes the parallel surface areas, which reduces broadside coupling and crosstalk.
And finally, the contact is simply designed for higher bandwidth. The contact geometry is designed, simulated, and optimized for 50 and 100 ohm systems given the contract pitch and appropriate grounding schematics.
Micro Edge Card Sockets
Samtec high-speed, edge card interconnect systems are available in a variety of pitches, stack heights, and orientations. They are used just about everywhere, including computers and peripherals, telecom, datacom, industrial equipment, medical, test and measurement, instrumentation, and military and aerospace, among others.
Speaking of variety, edge card socket strips are available on 0.50 mm, 0.635 mm, 0.80 mm, 1.00 mm, 1.27 mm, and 2.00 mm pitch. Orientations include vertical (surface mount), right angle, edge mount, and pass through.
Edge card is great for modular designs; designers can easily upgrade or configure their system by swapping out the board. They’re almost always a high speed, high bandwidth product because there’s one connector, a shorter signal path, and one less connection/interface.
