This 56 Gbps PAM4 demonstration of a Keysight 32 port PXI VNA with Samtec Flyover™ interconnect systems was presented at DesignCon 2018.
In this video, Keith Guetig (who is Samtec’s answer to Matt Damon) explains how Samtec’s Flyover™ designs provide a cost effective, high-performance answer to the challenges of 28 and 56 Gbps bandwidth, and beyond.
A Keysight Keysight M9375A PXIe VNA sources 8 pairs of 56G-PAM4 reference channels. The 8 signal pairs route through a Samtec high speed cable assembly, with a Flyover QSFP-DD on end 1 and an AcceleRate® Cable assembly on end 2. (Note: The FQSFP-DD standard calls for up to 16 pairs, but we only used 8 in this demo because of test board limitations).
The cable is a 12” (30.5 cm) Samtec Eye Speed® ultra-low skew twinax cable, operating at 56 Gbps PAM4 within the Flyover QSFP-DD systems. The 8 signal pairs then route back to the VNA where real-time frequency domain measurements such as channel insertion loss, return loss, NEXT and FEXT occur.
Samtec’s Flyover systems can help extend signal reach and density to achieve next gen speeds by routing signals via ultra-low skew twinax cable.
As data rates increase, routing signals through lossy PCBs, vias and other components has become one of the most complex challenges designers face.
Samtec’s Flyover™ designs allow data to “fly over” the lossy pcb, for a cost effective, high-performance answer to the challenges of 28 Gbps bandwidth and beyond.
Samtec’s AcceleRate® is a high speed Flyover Cable and High speed mezzanine system in one product family.
The cable assembly and mating socket strip have a slim body width ideal for closer proxmity to the IC. The high-density 2-row design comes in 8 and 16 pair configurations (with 32 pairs in development), on .635 mm pitch, for up to 92 pairs per square inch.
Samtec’s FQSFP-DD takes the flyover architecture concept to the QSFP-DD form factor.
QSFP-DD pluggable modules support double the aggregate bandwidth of conventional QSFP modules by adding a second row of contacts which enable support for a 16 differential pair electrical interface.
Systems designed for QSFP-DD modules will be backwards compatible with existing QSFP plug-in modules.
We’ve also already established excellent correlation between this live measured data and previously established simulation data. Therefore HFSS models area available upon request. Please contact us at SIG@Samtec.com for more product information.
