Embedded vision systems are commonplace in everyday applications. As an example, ADAS systems in modern automobiles increase driver and passenger safety.
In another application, visual inspection systems reduce manufacturing errors on the production line. Additionally, drones are revolutionizing data collection for consumers, researchers and enterprises alike.
Embedded vision system components continue to advance in complexity. However, they all need connecting at the system level. Fortunately, that’s where Samtec excels!
Interconnects for High-Precision Embedded Vision Systems
From the image sensor and camera module through the processing unit, system I/O and illumination and lighting, Samtec offers embedded vision developers a comprehensive portfolio of high-precision interconnect.
With the explosive growth of these technologies, Samtec has released a new Embedded Vision Solutions Guide. This new tool summarizes key Samtec solutions from every sub-system of an embedded vision system.
Image Sensor
Images sensors continue to shrink in size while increasing in density. Samtec’s ultra micro board stacking solutions offer ultra-fine pitch, ultra-low profile slim body designs. They route signals from the image sensor through to the camera module.

Camera Module
Camera modules have to support high data rates, a variety of I/O and power. In several applications, they also need to be rugged to withstand higher vibrations. Samtec Edge Rate® Connector Strips are ideal for use inside camera modules.

Processing Unit
Aside from the image sensor, the heart of any embedded vision system is the processing unit. Solutions range from low-end 8-bit/32-bit MCUs, FPGAs and latest GPUs. Processing units typically consist of System on Modules (SoM) or Computer on Modules (CoM) for easy system designs.
Samtec makes stacking SoMs and CoMs easier with High-Density Array solutions. Samtec array connectors combine hundreds of I/Os with high-speed 28 Gbps (and higher) performance.
For more information, please visit samtec.com/arrays.
System I/O
Embedded vision systems interface to external systems over a variety of I/Os. One option is Ethernet. Another is optical. Yet another option could be RF.
Fortunately, Samtec offers the high-performance I/O interconnect required for low-latency systems. Samtec’s RF portfolio supports industry standards like CoaXpress and 12G-SDI. For more information on Samtec RF solutions, please visit samtec.com/RF.
Samtec’s FireFly system offers mid-board optical engines running at 28 Gbps. For more information on FireFly, please visit samtec.com/firefly.
Lighting/Illumination
All embedded vision systems require lighting and illumination. Samtec Flexible Stacking interconnects optimize lighting unit life-span and functionality. Equally important, Samtec’s headers and sockets offer the most flexibility in the industry.

Samtec and Connect Tech Co-exhibit at VISION
One of the largest embedded vision industry events is VISION. With a motto of “Be Visionary”, it’s a gathering of the “Who’s Who?” in the industry.
Samtec will be co-exhibiting at VISION with embedded computing experts Connect Tech, Inc. from Guelph, ON. Conveniently, solutions will be presented showing Samtec connectors in Connect Tech SoMs/CoMs.
Additionally, Samtec will have two demos. One demo will feature Samtec 12G-SDI RF connectors. The second highlights Samtec’s FireFly™ Micro Flyover System™.
RF Connectors Industry Standards Compliance Demo
Industry standards – like CoaXpress and 12G-SDI – are commonplace in embedded vision systems. Samtec offers a comprehensive portfolio of HD-BNC™, DIN 1.0/2.3 and BNC connectors that conform to CoaXpress and 12G-SDI standards.
The demo features a Keysight N5232B PNA-L Microwave Network Analyzer operating up to 20 GHz. The demo measures the return loss of Samtec’s HD-BNC™, DIN 1.0/2.3 and BNC connectors in RA, SMT and vertical configurations.
Samtec has developed optimized RF compliance boards specifically for this demonstration. Samtec technical experts at VISION will explain how Samtec’s RF SI engineers can help customers optimize the layout of their high-performance RF boards.
14 Gbps FireFly™ FMC Development Kit
Samtec’s 14 Gbps FireFly™ FMC Development Kit provides an easy connection between FPGAs and fiber optics. This new solution offers an easy-to-use evaluation and development platform for Samtec’s FireFly™ optical engines.
Samtec will demonstrate 140 Gbps aggregate throughput. The FMC module attached to a Xilinx Kintex UltraScale FPGA KCU105 Evaluation Kit.
Stop by the Connect Tech/Samtec booth in Hall 1 Stand I31 at VISION for more details.
