“Samtec is a different breed of cat!” This statement could not be more true.
From Samtec’s DNA to being a global technology leader, Samtec strives to innovate differently very day. As a Technical Marketing Engineer Co-op for the last two years, I have had the opportunity to experience Samtec’s culture, technology, collaboration, and people first hand.
I started my Samtec Co-op Program in January 2020 in the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, Samtec provided me the best experience possible given all the restrictions that were in place. I could not be more grateful for my experience.
Putting Theory in to Practice
My long-term career goal combines engineering analysis with business strategies. The Samtec Technical Marketing co-op position provided an opportunity to do just that. I am studying electrical engineering at San Jose State University. During my work periods, I am applying my classroom theory in sales and marketing projects at Samtec.
For example, a Samtec optical applications engineer trained me to use a multichannel benchtop Bit Error Rate Tester (BERT). Since I do not have access to BERTs at school, it was really exciting to use one as a co-op. For my project, I used a BERT to measure the performance of the 28 Gbps FireFly™ Evaluation Kit. I captured the results on video (see below) to help other engineers who will use the kit.
I was so excited to see how what I learn in the classroom effects the real world. Additionally, I was challenged to develop new skillsets in scriptwriting, video recording and production to help market one of Samtec’s development kits. This is just one of the many opportunities at Samtec that allowed me to combine engineering analysis with business strategies and tactics.
Real World Experience and Collaboration
Samtec exhibits at many trade shows to “sell” its high-performance interconnect solutions. During COVID, I attended and supported several virtual events. Once the pandemic passed, I was able to attend a few in-person events. During these events, I helped with pre-event planning, booth set-up and tear down, handed out giveaways, interacted with customers, took lead notes and more.

Trade shows also provide an opportunity to expand your personal network. Meeting and communicating with industry experts has deepened my understanding of the electronics components industry. Exposure to market-leading innovation and technology, marketing and sales strategies and hands-on training has been extremely gratifying.
Samtec gave me the opportunity not only to expand my skillsets, but also to grow and develop as an individual throughout my Samtec co-op experience. I am most thankful.
A Final Thank You
Finally, I want to offer big thank you to my manager and mentor Matt Burns. Matt went out of his way to ensure I had plenty of opportunity and experience throughout my co-op experience. Without him, I would not have grown, developed, and enjoyed the wonderful opportunities and experiences I had during my time at Samtec.

I started working for Samtec in 1985, still in college and the Co-Op program was not available. The Co-Op opportunity is unmatched for young adults learning the tools needed to be a success in the field. Samtec DNA teaches a person much more than how to do business. It grows a young adult into a sucessful human being in many more respects. Hats off to Matt Burns and the Samtec Co-Op program!!
