As end-applications venture into the sub-Terahertz spectrum, Samtec has recognized the need for a new generation of products, one that incorporates an innovative approach by integrating a cable design that can support frequencies up to 90 GHz (E-band) with loss performance improved over today’s coaxial cables.
Enter our next-generation micro waveguide technology, offering the near-loss performance of a rigid waveguide while still providing the flexibility and size typically associated with a coaxial cable.
In this video from IMS 2023, J.R. Bonnefoy, a Systems Engineer at Samtec, walks us through a live product demonstration showing both E-band and V-band flexible waveguides.

With V-band we demonstrated 10 Gbps Ethernet traffic modulated at 60 GHz routed through Samtec’s flexible waveguide, using Vubiq Networks’ HaulPass V10g radio. The mm wave radio generates signals, and a small horn antenna is connected to the transceiver via a 30 cm Samtec flexible waveguide.
The signals then travel to the receiver antenna. Another flexible guide connects the antenna back to the radio. The antennas rotate continuously in the demo, emphasizing the freedom of movement enabled by the flexible guide.

On Vubiq’s user interface, we can see the full 10 Gbps throughput with a really good Signal-to-Noise Ratio.
On the other side of the bench we have another demonstration showing Samtec’s E-band flexible waveguide in a test and measurement application. It is connecting Vubiq Networks’ HaulPass E10g radio to a Spectrum Analyzer.

A one-meter long waveguide connects directly to the upconverter, ADI’s ADMV7310 with WR12 flange for easy bring up.

We can see a very flat response on the Spectrum Analyzer with no suck-outs for the entire band centered around 73 GHz.
Waveguide technology is still in development, but it’s one of many new microwave and mm wave products and technologies available from Samtec.
