Samtec’s FireFly™ Micro Flyover System™ continues to gain industry acceptance in mid-board copper and optical cable assembly systems. The ECUO series can be found in a number of applications requiring standard temperature ranges.
The popularity of ECUO has established a need for an extended temperature version of the FireFly™ Active Optical Cable Assemblies. In response, Samtec recently released the ETUO series.

Key ETUO Features
The ETUO series shares the core features of Samtec’s existing ECUO series. Both are designed for flexibility and are interchangeable with the FireFly™ copper assemblies using the same connector system.
However, the new ETUO series support temperature ranges of -40°C to +85°C. Other key features of ETUO include:
- High-speed performance to 10.3125 Gbps per channel
- x12 simplex or x12 duplex optical transceiver system
- Data “flies over” the PCB for easier routing
- Integral heat sink provides optimal cooling for thermal operating conditions
These key features enable up to 123.75 Gbps aggregate data rate. Additional 4-channel simplex and duplex configurations with extended temperature are under development with a targeted Spring 2017 release. Beta versions are available on request.
Samtec tests the ETUO series to industry-standard ruggedized standards. All ETUO solutions provided demonstrated error-free transmission during MIL-STD-810G shock and vibration testing.
ETUO Enables New FireFly™ Applications
The extended temperature range rugged capabilities of the ETUO series makes it ideally suited a variety of new applications. These include commercial and military aviation, IFE, IR cameras and wireless backhaul instrumentation and others. Samtec’s ITAR registration eases the support for MIL/AERO applications.
