Love is in the air around Samtec. As we make it through February, we are reminded of Valentines Day and how much we love our families, our jobs, and you! Plus, it is very cool around our headquarters in Southern Indiana. We had a lovely ice warning and woke up to about ½” (12.7mm) of ice coating most things around the factory. What else can you do except stay home and be with the ones you love… or maybe it is time to find that love connection you have been looking for!
Electronic interconnects are the perfect ice breaker for those lovely conversations and to really get the love connection started. Follow along as we visit one of our most loved connectors. If you feel so inclined to read it in a Barry White voice, you never know where the night may take you. Or, if you read it through the lens of your middle school self, you might just giggle the whole time. The choice is yours!
SEARAY™
SEARAY™ has grown to be the largest selling series and most flexible family for us. Its broad reach, pin configurations, options, support, and testing prove it as a leader for any array connector out there. The main series SEAM/SEAF (we sometimes abbreviate the family as SEAx… change the capitals around and you get SEaX) has spawned so many options over the years that it has left its mark on the connector portfolio, of not just Samtec, but many of our competitors as well. This flexible design and the male and female options make it easy to find the perfect mate for you.
SEARAY gets Around
SEARAY™ does not care about where you came from, or what sloppy signals you may be sending, it is here for you, where you are, and wants to spark that love connection with you. I spent a little time with some of our industry managers to find out why their customer base had a love connection with SEARAY™. Here are what a few of them said (possibly paraphrased a bit by the author);
Medical – “Medical customers Love SEARAY™ for the orientation options, stack heights, and flexibility to serve their needs. It goes in any type of equipment in the industry. One of my recent favorite applications is an ultrasound piece of equipment to focus on the Heart. If that does not get your blood flowing, I don’t know what will”
Mil/Aero – “SEARAY™ is one of the highest-class connectors we have (IPC Class 3 that is). It can weather any storm for our Military and Aerospace customers (With our Severe Environment Testing). The flexibility for manpack radios to satellites, and everything in between is unmatched. This has led SEARAY™ to be the base standard for many VITA standards. What is not to love about this connector!”
Industrial – “Smart Factories, Robotics, Automation… SEARAY™ works in all of those places. Power, controls, low speed, high speed, and differential lines all mixed together, yeah baby, love for every type of industrial application.
Automotive – “SEARAY™ doesn’t care if you send mixed signals, it can handle it. We have seen great response around Autonomous Driving platforms due to the bandwidth and ability to send all types of protocols through one connector. When those self-driving cars get smarter you could spend more time doing other things in cars… wink”
Spice up your SEARAY
If you haven’t made the love connection yet, maybe you need something more.
Lubrication – Maybe there is too much friction during mating.
Jack Screws – High forces sometimes call for extra hardware.
Press Fit – You can’t handle the heat (of reflow temperatures), you could always just press it in.
Cables – You are just too far away and need that extra reach? Just don’t get too kinky… you could kill the vibe (if you destroy the coaxial structure that is).
Conclusion
The love connection is strong with SEARAY™. Higher speed and tighter pitch options could be found in some of our newer arrays like the AcceleRate® or our NovaRay® families. Each of these new assemblies are an evolution, or a child, of what we have learned over the years.
