Samtec has hundreds of videos that span across everything from products, to demos, to presentations, branding, and more. We rebuilt our video search to be more lightweight, and also added a huge new feature.
Previous to this update, all of the videos opened in a modal pop-up window, which prevented users from easily sharing videos, viewing them in fullscreen mode, seeing their descriptions, etc.
With this new update, any time a user clicks on a video, it will open in a brand new page that is dedicated to that video.
This allows the user to see the description of the video, view the video in fullscreen, easily share the URL, and save the URL for later. This also makes it easier for search engines to find our videos and rank them within video search results, which is never a bad thing.
Cool Behind-the-Scenes Software Stuff
For you nerds out there, while the page may not look a whole lot different than it was before, it’s actually a rebuild of the application without any outside dependencies, which allows it to load fully from a global CDN and run very quickly in the user’s browser.
We’re also taking advantage of a static site building tool called Eleventy to build and release new content to this page daily to make sure it always stays up to date with our latest videos using the Vimeo API. This means we do not need to perform a manual software release to update the content on the page. This essentially means this entire application is automated, maintenance-free, and will always be updated with our most recent video content as soon as it’s available on Vimeo.
One other cool thing we’re doing on this page that is completely invisible to users is loading the header and footer of the website completely from a CDN as well. This makes it incredibly snappy and opens up the possibility of doing this on other areas of the website as well, meaning better performance all around for Samtec.com content and applications.
