We started a Meet the Experts blog series a few weeks ago centered around our leading technology experts. At Samtec, we’re customer driven, focused, and believe our technical Sudden Service® begins with our SI engineering support team. Our second expert in this series is Juan Aguirre, SIG Support Manager.
Juan, tell us a little about yourself. Why did you choose engineering?
I was born and raised in Guayaquil, Ecuador. I came to the US nearly a decade ago. I attained an AS EE from Northern Virginia Community College and have a BS EE from Pennsylvania State University (PSU). I’m an active IEEE member, and I’ve been working within the interconnect field since 2016. Currently, I’m the SI Engineering Manager for our SI Frontline Support at Samtec. In my free time, I enjoy camping, sailing or anything outdoors. I also like to fly drones and create 3D print designs.
Engineering, to me, is an interesting and enticing career path. I’m able to help designers bring their applications to life while finding a solution customized to fit their needs. It’s fascinating to see the development of new technologies and being a part of the bigger picture within industry leading trends.
How does Samtec define Signal Integrity?
For Samtec Signal Integrity goes beyond just securing transmitted signals from point A to point B. It’s a diversified field with many specializations. It’s enabled Samtec to bring new technologies, standards, tools, materials, and research to market quickly. Samtec SI capabilities enable application-specific support for any customer in any industry where faster, more reliable, and robust signals are needed.
What kind of SI support does Samtec provide?
We offer cradle-to-grave support from the design stage, to concept implementations on high-speed solutions, to metric performances where we evaluate each customer’s unique application and help guide them and reach a solution. These take the form of application-based consultations like sharing our electrical models, encrypted 3D HFSS components, test data, BOR optimizations, SI reports, EMI effectiveness, and custom product solutions. These are only a few highlighted examples of our SI support solutions metrics.
How is Samtec’s SI support differentiated in the industry? What sets Samtec apart?
One of the main differentiators is our unmatched customer Sudden Service® focus. Our SI team can assist all SI-related inquiries from technology partners of tier-one customers to start-up entrepreneurs, academia, and any organization.
What technology trends are driving the requirement for SI support?
We’ve observed a surge of new high-speed standards generations like PCIe 5.0/6.0, Gen-Z, DDR5, IEEE 802.3 (100, 200, 400 Gb/s Ethernet), MIPI CSI-2, VITA, new DSP equalizations methods, and new coding schemes (NRZ, PAM4, PAM6). Some of the new technologies are reflected in current 112 Gbps PAM4 design activity with research on 224 Gbps performance.

How are these technology trends affecting Samtec’s interconnect design or product roadmap?
By partnering with our customers, we can bring new 112 Gbps PAM4 interconnect solutions like NovaRay® Extreme Density Arrays and Si-Fly™ Low-Profile High-Density Cable System closer to the ASIC package itself. This reduces signal loss across the signal channel.
Also, increasing our new releases of precision RF, millimeter flex waveguide applications, custom cable solutions, and Glass Core Technologies. All of these solutions plus more are found through our Product Overview Brochure.
