Samtec’s FAEs, applications engineers and product specialists serve customers with application-specific technical support.
“Meet the Expert” Blog Series
Many design engineers may wonder, “Who are Samtec’s ‘experts’?” That’s a good question. Samtec’s “Jedi” seek to cultivate personal relationships with customers, fellow engineers and industry leaders. The team also looks for new opportunities to serve, advise and train partners and customers on the latest interconnect trends and solutions.
As a result, Samtec is pleased to announce a new Blog Series called “Meet the Experts.” Each month, a Samtec technical expert will discuss a bit about themselves, what they are working on, and how that helps Samtec customers.
Who is the first “expert?” None other than Scott McMorrow. Many Samtec customers and partners already know Scott McMorrow, but let’s get to know him more in his own words.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I have a BSEE from Virginia Tech and have been involved in the design and engineering of electronic systems for over 40 years. I have consulted in the areas of Signal Integrity, Power Integrity, Electromagnetics and training for the past 26 years and have written and presented extensively on these subjects.
What is your current role at Samtec?
I am a Strategic Technologist for SI solutions at Samtec, involved in the development of next-generation high performance interconnects for 224 Gbps and above. In this capacity, I evaluate new methodologies to improve product performance and density. In addition, I evangelize Samtec technology, including Samtec Flyover® systems.
What technology trends are affecting Samtec’s R+D activities?
The COVID-19 pandemic is rebalancing on-site work in favor of a hybrid on-site/WFH model that requires ever more information to be transmitted and shared among teams and colleagues. People are hungry for information. Engineers are hungry for new knowledge and learning.
At Samtec, our initiatives are meant not only to both enable the industry to transmit and receive ever larger amounts of data at 224 Gbps and higher, but also to share the learnings necessary to implement future systems.
Internally, Samtec’s Virtual Computing initiatives enable global design and engineering teams to stay connected and productive on-site or WFH. Externally, Samtec’s gEEk® spEEk Signal Integrity Webinar Series trains engineers in the principles and techniques necessary to leverage higher performance interconnect products.
What are some of the technical challenges facing Samtec?
The industry is reaching fundamental limitations of mechanical metal-based interconnects that must be navigated carefully in the next 10 years. As data rate requirements increase and size decreases, losses and crosstalk become the chief limiters. Contact size, length, tolerance and reliability must be managed to achieve the speeds required.
How is Samtec combatting these challenges?
Samtec has research projects in both conventional and non-conventional interconnects. Research topics include new materials, manufacturing processes, SI design processes for both baseband copper applications of connectors and cables, as well as narrowband waveguide applications for high-frequency RF.
Samtec is extending the performance of our industry-leading Samtec Eye Speed® Ultra Low Skew Twinax Cable, as well as breaking new performance bounds with microwave/mmWave connectors, cable assemblies and flexible waveguides for future advanced applications.
What Samtec solutions and services help customers address these challenges?
Frontline Samtec SI support, BORs and designs, a comprehensive technical library, detailed test reports, SI Evaluation Kits, and active designs with leading edge industry SERDES all help engineering customers in the design-in and evaluation process.
