Enough of the letter “P” already. Message recieved.
In any case, modeling and simulating next-gen 224 Gbps signal channels poses many challenges. Design engineers must optimize the entire signal path, not just a specific component. The signal path includes transceiver and receivers, die-to-packaging transitions, BGA breakout regions, PCB traces, connector breakout regions and interconnect.
Any number of design decisions affect multi-gigabit per second channel data rate performance. As a result, it’s important to fine the right technical approach. Thankfully, state-of-the-art design software allows for iterative product development and optimization. This is especially true when in comes to port types and usage.
Practical Ports a Prerequisite
I couldn’t help myself with more “P”s. Sorry. Or am I?
In any case, simulating and modeling signal channels starts at the component level. Popular modeling and simulating tools like Ansys HFSS utilize a number of port types. Designers and engineers need to understand what they are and how to use them.
Opinions on port type choice vary, but there is no question the affect they play in a simulation. Across the component signal channel analysis, errors can accrue depending on port type, size, location and the effects of de-embedding.
Define and Using Practical Ports
Have no fear, help is on the way. Technical experts from Samtec and Ansys stand ready to offer their experience and observations.
Please join Scott McMorrow, Strategic Technologist here at Samtec, and Rickard Petersson, Director or R+D at Ansys, as they discuss Practical Ports for Perfect Performance: HFSS Ports for High-Performance Interconnect Solutions.
This webinar spotlights the theoretical basis of various port types used in Ansys HFSS. During the webinar, Rickard Petersson will answer the following questions:
- What is a wave port?
- What is a lump port?
- What is a circuit port?
After defining port types, practical examples will also presented. More importantly, Scott McMorrow will discuss Ansys HFSS tips and tricks for using various port types in real designs to deliver maximum accuracy.
