Our friends at EETech are sponsoring Industry Tech Days. Although they didn’t ask for my advice, I suggested they use the tagline of “Three Days of Peace and Music” for the event. They rejected that brilliant (and original) suggestion and went with “the largest ever virtual trade show and conference for electrical engineers worldwide.” Next, I proactively suggested “Have It Your Way” as a slogan to describe the variety of content available. Not knowing a good idea when they hear … [Read more...]
Are Tin-Lead Plating Options Still Available?
I can remember a time when most of Samtec's connectors were offered in a Tin-Lead plating option, and we weren't alone in that offering. Long before the days of REACH and RoHS, Tin-Lead was the standard plating offering. In came the early 2000's when the EU introduced the Restriction of Hazarodous Substances (RoHS), and Tin-Lead in electronics had to go in order to be sold within the EU. This left manufacturers in the electronics industry, and the engineers within them updating parts, … [Read more...]
A New High Performance Test System – 70 GHz
Samtec Bulls Eye® test point systems are ideal for high performance test applications because of their compression interfaces, small footprint, and high cycle count capabilities. Bulls Eye is now available in a new 70 GHz design, which joins the existing 50, 40, and 20 GHz systems. The Bulls Eye grid design and smaller footprint enable smaller evaluation boards and shorter trace lengths. The high-density array design saves significant PCB space compared to traditional test points. … [Read more...]
High-Speed Backplane Systems: A Comparison
Samtec's line of high-speed backplane interconnect systems are used in a variety of applications and designs. I spoke with Jonathan Sprigler, Samtec's High-Speed Backplane Product Manager, about our products, the differences between them, and applications. DANNY: Jonathan, can you give us a quick overview of Samtec's high-speed backplane connector products? JONATHAN: Our two high-speed backplane product families are ExaMAX® and XCede® HD. They are both press-fit connector families … [Read more...]
New Precision RF Guide to Solutions and Support
A quiet vacation away from everything sounds like a dream. An all-inclusive spot so you can keep your toes in the sand and umbrella drinks in your hand all day long. Samtec’s RF product line comes with full system support, which is similar to an all-inclusive resort just without the beach, or the drinks, or even the vacation part… sorry to interrupt those ocean views. Getting back to RF – Samtec is unique in that we are vertically integrated from product design and fabrication to full tech … [Read more...]
Is the CPU, GPU, FPGA, or ASIC Better?
My first computer put out a crazy 33 MHz of processing power from the 486 CPU. That was on "Turbo Mode" of course, and when it was turned off we were left with 16 MHz. Insert frowny face. Maybe you are too young to remember a turbo button, but if you aren't you can probably remember there was rarely a time you would turn it off. In the times that you did it was because of software requirements, and you probably felt as though you had lost something. At least I did. Fast forward to today, … [Read more...]
When Connector Standards Are Not Standard…
There are some products that have become so familiar that their name has entered everyday language. The Hoover Company became so successful in the vacuum cleaner market that its name has entered the language to describe the task they perform. Here in the UK, many Brits of a certain age do not do the vacuuming. Instead, they “hoover”. The same is true of more up-to-date technology. In the world of the internet, Google now receives more than three-quarters of all … [Read more...]
Connectors for Immersion Cooling
You might remember the last blog on Immersion Cooling where we introduced Samtec's new landing page for Immersion Cooling. The test results are in, and they look good. Samtec has partnered with Engineered Fluids to run a series of qualification tests on several of our product series. This was done to see how well they perform, and to prove the connectors function as they should in that environment. What Was Tested? So far, we have the test results for our popular SEARAYTM series and … [Read more...]
Demand For High Bandwidth Systems Keeps Growing – 112 Gbps and More
The pandemic has not slowed the demand for high bandwidth, high-performance systems, such as 56 Gbps PAM4, 112 Gbps PAM4 and more. Designer engineers in all types of industries, from data center, HPC, networking, telecom, medical, storage, semiconductor, wireless, test and measurement, automation and security, to name a few, continue to develop architectures to accommodate the seemingly insatiable demand for data. Earlier this year, when we were participating in live conferences and … [Read more...]
PCI Express: Is 85 Ohms Really Needed?
In late April Samtec kicked off its series of gEEk® spEEk webinars. gEEk spEEk allows engineers to interact with Samtec’s engineering leaders and SI experts on a variety of selected SI-related topics. Samtec SI Engineer Steve Krooswyk presented one of the first webinars entitled "PCI Express: Is 85 Ohms Really Needed?" This webinar was well-attended and incredibly well-received. I spoke to Steve about the presentation and why he selected this topic, about the PCIe 85 ohm requirement, and … [Read more...]
