Performance. Interoperability. Improved SWAP-C. These design trends are redefining mil/aero and rugged embedded systems for users, suppliers, prime contractors and more. The SOSA Consortium is one of many standards bodies addressing these needs. The new SOSA Technical Standard 1.0 defines a modular architecture for composing sensors with COMMS, EO/IR, EW, Radar, and SIGINT modalities. Rather than defining an entirely new system, this Standard defines a set of logical modules that group … [Read more...]
Here are the January 2022 Web Updates to Samtec.com
The new year started off strong with the release of a major new tool to search High-Speed Board-to-Board products. We also upgraded several other tools and released a few solid content updates to the website. Here are the major updates to Samtec.com in January 2022. Brand New High-Speed Board to Board Solutionator Tool Sequels are sometimes just as good or better than the original. To follow our release of our popular Flex Stacking Solutionator, we have just released a similar tool … [Read more...]
New Connector Search: A High-Speed Mated Set In Seconds
What do these movie series have in common: Toy Story, the Bourne Series, Mission Impossible, the original Spiderman, and The Godfather? They are all movies where, in many peoples’ opinions, the sequel was just as good as or better than the original. What does that have to do with Samtec? Glad you asked! A Historic September OK, that's a bit of hyperbole. But last Fall Samtec introduced the Solutionator® Flex Stacking tool, an online connector search tool that provides you the mated … [Read more...]
The Most Popular Connector Products: Samtec’s Top 10
I love most "Top 10" lists. This morning I came across an article in Rolling Stone that lists the highest paid musicians of 2021. The list surprised me because over half of the musicians were from previous generations, and they earned big money in 2021 because they sold the rights to their songs. Here's the list of the 10 Highest-Paid Musicians. Those with a double asterisk (**) earned most of the money by selling the rights to their songs: 1. Bruce Springsteen ($590 million) ** 2. … [Read more...]
New PCIe® Gen 4.0 With Surprise Hot Add Capability
One of Samtec's key demonstrations at SC21 featured Samtec's new PCIe® 4.0 over fiber solutions. The demo highlighted Samtec’s PCIe®-Over-Fiber FireFly™ Adapter Card (PCOA Series), developed by our partner Dolphin. The PCOA series utilizes Samtec’s PCI Express®-Over-Fiber FireFly™ Optical Cable Assemblies (PCUO series). Samtec is the only company in the world offering reset functionality and cable present sidebands in this form factor. In HPC and data centers system architectures, common … [Read more...]
Vision Systems in Automotive Applications
Vision systems are playing a key role in the future of automotive design. Understanding and reacting to the hazards found on our roads has historically been a burden that belongs to the driver, but modern vehicles are playing a greater role than ever in keeping us safe. Vision systems, whether visible light cameras or advanced detection systems such as LIDAR (light detecting and ranging) and proximity sensors are tools that can be employed to improve our situational awareness. The first … [Read more...]
Return of the gEEk® spEEk – Popular Webinar Series Continues in 2022
"Do. Or do not. There is no try." - Yoda, Grand Master of the Jedi Order Any self-respecting blog on "gEEks" should refer to Star Wars, right? In any case, the sage wisdom of Yoda continues to influence the Samtec gEEk spEEk team. Like Yoda says, the choice is to "Do". The gEEk® spEEk Signal Integrity Webinar Series returns in 2022. Samtec's gEEk spEEK team and presenters are excited to continue providing these free educational videos to our design and engineering customers. Many SI … [Read more...]
The Most Important Connector Blogs of 2021
This week marks a historical milestone. In 1987 the first female artist was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Granted, this milestone isn't of lasting significance to mankind like a revloutionary technology or a treatment for a dangerous medical condition, but it is newsworthy to some of us. By the way, the honor goes to Aretha Franklin. Some of my favorite Aretha songs include "I Never Loved A Man The Way That I Love You" and "Think," the latter being my personal favorite. Her … [Read more...]
A Student’s Perspective – Technical Marketing
As an undergraduate EE major, I have noticed many of my fellow students focus purely on the technical side of engineering. However, my goal is to understand how business principles influence engineering decisions. My role as a Technical Marketing Engineering (TME) Co-op at Samtec allows me to do just that. Technical Marketing provides an opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge in various areas of engineering. One day I am learning about fiber optics. On another, I am learning about stamping … [Read more...]
Thermal Management in the Connector World
Temperatures are falling near the Samtec headquarters in Southern Indiana. Winter is upon us and we wish that the sun's radiation heating would be a bit more efficient this time of year. Other heat transfer methods we wish were more efficient in the connector world are convection and conduction cooling around electronic systems. Most interconnects we deal with are passive and don't actively generate heat on their own but they can play a critical role in the thermal management of the system as a … [Read more...]
