Now more than ever it is important that we take the time to do something we enjoy. It is also the perfect time to catch up with some of the engineers who are doing fascinating work on the internet. And so, to help you spend some time, I am going to take a look at a few blogs, podcasts and videos that you might have missed. Grant Imahara Let's start with someone you might have seen before. Grant Imahara is a well-known engineer and technology presenter whose career serves as an … [Read more...]
The Digital Thread
The development of 3D modelling has revolutionized mechanical computer-aided design (MCAD). It has enabled engineers to develop new products quickly, in collaboration with colleagues around the world, and respond rapidly to changing demands. We have already looked at some of the advantages that 3D design brings to engineers. However, the mechanical aspect of any design is only part of the process. The creation of any device represents the blending of different disciplines, … [Read more...]
Engineers, Assemble!
There are many historical innovations that are the product of adversity, and the current situation is an extreme example. While it is not the first time that humanity has faced a truly global challenge like the COVID-19 pandemic, this time the world is connected by technology in a completely unprecedented way. The response has been incredible. Within hours of the true scale of the current emergency becoming apparent, engineers around the world had started to collaborate, innovate … [Read more...]
Three Dimensions for Everyone
When the Boeing 777 first entered service in 1995, it ushered in a new era for commercial aviation. For the first time, Boeing had worked closely with the airlines in the development of a new jet to ensure it satisfied the needs of the end customer. It was also the first Boeing product to incorporate fly-by-wire technology, the flight control system that had been so successful in military aircraft and Boeing's largest competitor, Airbus. More importantly for engineers, the … [Read more...]
Samples Are Vital
When Samtec was founded by Sam Shine back in 1976, the concept of service was at the very heart of the company. Whether it was quick delivery or easy access to samples, Sam was determined to give his customers the best possible experience. That idea of service still underpins every aspect of Samtec today. Selecting connectors is a tricky job simply due to the variety of products on offer. The modern design engineer faces a monumental task when choosing the right part. … [Read more...]
We Have The Power!
I recently attended the Engineering Design Show in the UK, where one of the clear trends in evidence was the rise of power connectors for printed circuit boards (PCBs). The reasons are pretty clear. New technology is making ever-greater demands for more power in smaller spaces. The march towards miniaturisation continues, while at the same time users want systems with more and more functionality. Modern applications are placing demands for power delivery to the printed circuit board … [Read more...]
Is Copper Dead?
In 1995, I attended a seminar in which the presenter told us that copper was dead. This sort of statement is not new. The connector market is filled with armchair pundits who predict the demise of everything from D-Subminiature connectors (which are very much alive and kicking) to the V.35 telecommunications connector (which is as dead as the Dodo). This just goes to prove that it is almost impossible to predict the future trends of this industry with any certainty. Making … [Read more...]
Trade Shows and Why We Love ‘Em
Most people in the electronics industry have a complicated relationship with trade shows. On one hand, they sound fabulously glamorous – the chance to visit a faraway town, connect with customers and show off your latest products. The reality is a little bit more mundane. Yes, it might be exotic to visit Paris, Munich or San Fransisco, but the truth is that you rarely see much beyond the taxi, the hotel or the convention centre. Trade shows mean early mornings, long days … [Read more...]
The Future of Content
The word “revolution” is very common in today’s world. Whether it’s a revolutionary new smartphone or a revolution in personal transport, it is a phrase that is used frequently. How many of these things are truly groundbreaking, or how many are victims of marketing is a matter of debate. Marketeers never lie, of course, but we have been known to squeeze the last ounce of truth from a story to make it appear more attractive! What cannot be denied is the staggering pace of … [Read more...]
Are You In a Harsh Environment for an Electronic Device?
Modern electronic devices are getting smaller with every new generation, and as a result, they are becoming more portable. At the same time, the performance of these devices is growing as the demands of consumers become greater. We expect to be able to connect to the internet wherever we go, and so we carry our cell phones, smartwatches and portable devices everywhere. Equipment manufacturers are keen to tell us that our new device will work in harsh conditions, but what does that … [Read more...]
