Smart cities, grids and factories are exciting and rapidly innovative industries in today’s world. As an Electrical Engineering student at San José State University in the heart of Silicon Valley, I can observe the innovation real-time. For example, the city of San José seeks to be the “smartest” city on the planet. As I progress in my studies, I look forward to seeing the practical applications in Smart Cities efforts.

Smart Cities – What are they?
A smart city is a framework to develop, deploy, and promote sustainable development practices to address growing urbanization challenges. Information and communication technologies (ICT) are the backbone. A big part of ICT framework is an intelligent network of connected objects and machines transmitting data.
Smart Cities are connected to the IoT via smartphones, mobile devices and connected vehicle and homes. More data and analysis reduces energy waste, streamlines trash collection, decreases traffic congestion and improves air quality. Infrastructure and technology integration allows fore new interactions with the surrounding environment. More interactions bring maximum benefit and efficiency to everyday life.
Improving Daily Life
As a robotics and vehicle enthusiast, I am geeked by new and exciting Smart City applications coming to market. Connected intersections receiving data from sensors to improve real-time traffic flow. Smart parking meters alert drivers to the nearest available parking spot. Charging stations alert electric vehicles in need of charge.
Multidirectional data networks are quickly replacing the traditional linear approach. This provides greater value and efficiencies to businesses and communities alike. The integration of infrastructure and technology in smart cities allows people to interact with the surrounding environment. New connections offer maximum benefit and efficiency in everyday life.
